Randy, 28 Years, Philippines
I am Randy Zamudio, 28 years of age, married and with two children. Previously I was
a factory worker
in Sackline Industries Inc. For now I am a Pedicab driver here in Lawang Bato, Valenzuela City and I have been doing
this kind of work for the last two years. I work for 16 hours a day, from 5 o’clock in the morning until 10 o’clock in the evening and I earn around P250-300 pesos a day. This is not enough for my daily family expenses because this only meets the cost of our
food. There are many other expenses to meet such as boarding rent, education of my children, and medication in times of sickness. As a consequence, I need to work hard and to stick to a very tight-budget.
During my work, I experience difficulties because there are times when there are
no passengers (customers) and this means less income for
me.
If there are
many passengers, I grab this opportunity to earn more income but the consequence of this is that I am often working on an empty stomach.
Because I am working long hours of work, I cannot pay attention to my family and children.
My Dream...
Although we have been registered in the Securities and Exchange Commission, we are still dreaming to have recognition of our force (the Pedicab drivers) as part of the labor force of our country and to enjoy the benefits like regular workers: respect of our rights as workers/Pedicab drivers and access to
social protection.
